Observing how British cinema performs at film festivals in China is one of our advocacies in priority. 2022, another year.
This year, apart from 8 studio backed/owned Harry Potter films, only 1 independent British film was selected as part of the official programme of the International Beijing Film Festival.
‘Perfect 10’ is a 2019 British feature film, written and directed by Eva Riley. It stars teenage gymnast and actress Frankie Box as Leigh, whose life and training is disrupted by changes in her family life. The film had its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on 3 October 2019 and was released in the UK on the 7 August 2020.
Leigh is a 15-year-old living with her father and preparing for her first gymnastics competition. Her life is disrupted when her older half-brother Joe, who she never knew she had, unexpectedly moves in. The disruption affects her gymnastics performance and Joe leads her into a world of moped crime.
Tickets to ‘Perfect 10’ were sold out within a minute after booking went live for the annual event. Film festivals and special film seasons have been the most common offline space for Chinese audience to experience foreign films from around the world in the past few years. This space is still growing for cultural exchange and business purposes.
However, as usual, European films dominated the annual festival’s programme. Alongside a frequent appearance by France and Italy, Greece was also given the whole retrospective category, dedicated to its national master Theodoros Angelopoulos.
We shall come back with more reports on Hainan International Film Festival toward the end of this year in December.
