Odyssey 2024, our annual independent film festival has announced Chris Lau as one of the two Lead Curators for this year’s programme.

Odyssey is a UK based independent film festival engaging with Greater China via a unique theme each year. During the festival period, It showcases over 60 films, hosts discussion panels and exclusive Q&As online and offline across the country in different cities. The theme for 2023 was “Global Sustainability”.

Here is Chris’s introduction:

“I have recently completed my MPhil in Film and Screen Studies at the University of Cambridge. In my dissertation, I analyse five Japanese films from 1949-1962 by employing feminist and queer theories. As a cinephile who loves attending film festivals, I volunteered at various events, notably as an Awards Officer for the Watersprite Student Film Festival in 2021. In the past year, I helped with the organisation of weekly screenings in Cambridge during term time as a committee member of the Cambridge World Cinema Society. Furthermore, to gain practical experiences in film and theatre production, I was involved in the production of several short films and a play in Cambridge.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, I have a particular interest in films in my hometown and across Asia. As the Co-Lead Curator of Odyssey 2024, I hope to bring an excellent selection of short and feature films that revolve around our chosen theme for this year, “food and travel”. I am looking forward to engaging with guests, panelists and audiences throughout the festival.”

The theme for Odyssey 2024 is “Food and Travel”, following our annual film festival’s innovative spirit in curation, we are the first festival to embrace such theme constructively across all genres. Each year, the festival appoints a new Lead Curator to support young film enthusiasts  to better develop their career in the industry.

Odyssey 2024 has a track record in being an effective platform to achieve our mission in talent development. Shirley Lin, Lead Curator for 2022, launched her own festival brand Mint Chinese Film Festival the year after her experience with us; and Riley Wong, Lead Curator for 2023 is now working as a Programme Office at the Hong Kong International Film Festival. Odyssey is committed to supporting more rising talents going forward.
