As the summer draws to a close, London based Focus Hong Kong returns to The Garden Cinema this September with another thoughtfully curated programme celebrating the enduring legacy of Hong Kong cinema.

Taking place on 6 September, the double bill presents two distinctly different yet equally influential films from the 1980s, offering audiences a chance to experience both the creative energy of the Hong Kong New Wave and the exhilarating craftsmanship of the territory’s commercial cinema.

The programme opens with Lau Kar-leung’s Tiger on the Beat (1988), a wonderfully chaotic blend of action, comedy and martial arts. Starring Chow Yun-fat and Conan Lee as an unlikely pair of detectives, the film remains one of the most entertaining examples of Hong Kong genre filmmaking, packed with inventive action sequences and Lau’s unmistakable directorial style.

Later in the evening, audiences can experience Patrick Tam’s Love Massacre (1981) in a stunning 4K restoration. One of the defining works of the Hong Kong New Wave, the film effortlessly moves between romance, psychological thriller and horror, demonstrating Tam’s bold cinematic language and his lasting influence on generations of filmmakers. More than four decades after its original release, Love Massacre continues to surprise audiences with its visual experimentation and emotional intensity.

Here at UK-China Film Collab, we are always inspired to see organisations like Focus Hong Kong continuing to bring restored Hong Kong classics back to the big screen. As restoration efforts gather pace and audience interest continues to grow, these screenings not only preserve an important cinematic heritage but also introduce these remarkable works to a new generation of film lovers.

We are delighted to see another exciting programme at The Garden Cinema and look forward to seeing these films enjoyed once again on the big screen.

As London enters the most exciting era ever in Chinese-language films curation, more and more films are being rediscovered, shared and reappreciated.

London is truly unique, but Hong Kong’s M+ is also gradually leading the way.
