Japanese student Hana Sato joined UK-China Film Collab as Specialised Curator via a credited placement module in partnership with Birkbeck, University of London.

Here is Hana’s introduction to herself and her proposed project:

“I am currently studying MA in Film and Screen Media with Film Programming and Curating pathway at the Birkbeck, University of London.

I was born and raised in Japan. I graduated from the University of East Anglia in BA Film and Television Studies. I have worked in various industries in Japan, including volunteering at international short film festivals. Film festivals and their programmes are always my biggest interest, and my goal is to work as a programmer for theatres or film festivals. That’s why I am now taking this MA course to gain skills and understand the industry deeply.

This year, I visited Berlinale with a student accreditation and attended most short film screenings. My current research and practice interests include regional film festivals, short films, and technology around moving images.

At UCFC, currently, I’m developing a screening programme which focuses on films that can connect three countries: UK, Japan and China. I hope this would be an opportunity to understand and communicate with those films and their cultures.”
