Odyssey: a Chinese cinema season – 60+ films in 8 curated sections, 10 discussion panels, exclusive Q&As and 4 awards. A not-to-be-missed festival in the UK to celebrate international cinema!
This panel discussion will focus on mainland Chinese regional cinema. More and more international scholars have paid attention to Chinese cinema. However, most of their research widely relies on the resources and archives from major Chinese cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai, to represent Chinese cinema as a whole. We would like to expand the scope of the debates around Chinese cinema by not only relying on major cities. Instead, this panel discussion will remind audiences of the diversity of Chinese cinema by tracing the history and development of different regional expressions in films, especially those regions that have been often neglected.
In this panel discussion, we will touch upon the history of Chinese regional cinema research and consider multiple waves that emerged in contemporary Chinese cinema with strong regional elements, from the Northeastern to the Southern new waves. Furthermore, we will explore whether these waves can reflect different directors’ identities within their hometowns. Questions that will be discussed include: “How do we interpret regional expressions? What constitutes the locality of mainland Chinese cinema, from local dialects, sceneries, memories, and unique cultures?”
*This panel will be conducted in English.
