This panel will introduce the latest AHRC funded project led by Dr Xiaosong Yang. The “UK-China Research and Innovation Collaboration in Cloud-based Virtual Film Production (UCCVP)” project aims to explore and investigate the status of cloud-based virtual film production in both the UK and China, identifying the key challenges of cross-country remote coordination and developing future strategic plans for UK-China collaborations in the film industry. The project will deliver a thorough market research report to inform and guide research institutes in the UK for future investment in working with China, and build a collaborative network in research and innovation, including beneficiaries in both academic and industrial communities from the two countries.

Dr Xiaosong Yang
Associate Professor, National Centre for Computer Animation, Bournemouth University. Dr Yang has over 30 years’ experience of research, education and professional practice in computer animation, and is passionate to promote technical innovation of AI in media production. Dr. Yang has rich experiences in managing teams with both artist and technician together, and collaborates closely with companies, like Disney Research, Double Negative, etc. He has produced 90+ peer-reviewed publications including many in prestigious journals and conferences. His work has been well reported by some of the most prestigious international news outlets, including NewScientist and MIT Technology Review. He has secured research grants from the European Commission, Arts and Humanities Research Council, British Academy, Newton Fund, Innovate UK etc. Dr. Yang’s excellent performance has helped NCCA （National Centre for Computer Animation）to win the Queen’s Anniversary Prizes in 2011.

Dr Pearl Haoqing Wang
Dr Wang is the director of the Centre for Global Corporation and Education Development of USC-SJTU Institute of Cultural and Creative Industry (ICCI), and the deputy Director of the Global Communication Research Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. After joining ICCI of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2016, Dr. Pearl Wang began to focus on virtual content production and started to teach courses ‘VR creative and production’ and ‘Virtual Contents Creative and Applications’. As an exhibition curator, she has been active in organising public exhibitions to promote the public education of creative technology. She is China PI of UK-China AHRC co-research projects ‘Immersive Innovative and Interactive Experiences’ (IIIE) in 2019 and ‘Cloud-based Virtual Film Production’ in 2021. Dr. Wang has also served as a city level entrepreneurship mentor in Shanghai, especially in the cultural and creative industries. She published books about understanding Chinese entrepreneurship.
