Award-winning animation Robot Dreams was released in mainland China on 8 June and in Hong Kong SAR on 20 June. How has it been doing?

Robot Dreams is a 2023 animated tragicomedy film written and directed by Pablo Berger. A Spanish-French co-production, it is based on the 2007 comic of the same name by Sara Varon. It is about the friendship between a dog and a robot in New York in 1984. The film does not contain any dialogue.

Robot Dreams had its world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2023, in the Special Screenings section. It received critical acclaim and won Best Film in the Contretemps section of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival as well as Best Independent Animated Feature at the 51st Annie Awards. It also won the Goya Award for Best Animated Film and the European Film Award for Best Animated Feature Film, and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards.

The film has now been released in mainland China for over 10 days and the box-office it accumulated is now top of the world, grossing 6.7 million RMB ( approx. $909,000), this has not included its box-office from both Special Administrative Regions, Hong Kong and Macau. The box-office could have been even higher, if the film source was not leaked to the public. By the time the film was released, many people had already seen it via the illegal source. As part of an advocacy campaign, we have been encouraging audience to pay respect and repay the ticket when the film was finally released. Our social media campaign posts in Chinese attracted over 10K readership and many promised to do so. It is difficult, however, to track how many of those readers actually went to the cinema to see the film again.

Robot Dreams will have a commercial life beyond its initial theatrical release, we believe. It will soon be available for streaming online but more interestingly, a theme park could potentially be developed from this European IP that has warmed many Chinese hearts.

Congratulations to such a remarkable success to our European friends!
