Selena has been selected to join the organisation via the 2025-2026 Future Talent Programme.

Below is her introduction:

“I’ve recently completed my MPhil in Film and Screen Studies at the University of Cambridge, where my dissertation considered Deleuze’s third synthesis of time and Nietzschean eternal return as connective frameworks for the temporalities of mortality, performance, and cinema. My research has been transmedial, spanning film, animation, and digital interactivity. Before that, I studied Ancient and Modern History at Oxford, writing my thesis on cross-flows in Hong Kong and Japanese media cultures from the 1980s to 2000s. I think the constant in this interdisciplinary movement has been an engagement with how human lives are lived and told – this is an interest I wish to expand into practical projects this year with UCFC, through programme curation and filmmaking.

At the moment, I’m interested in the serendipitous parallels between film ontology and themes in Hong Kong history. Hong Kong is my hometown and I’ve been based in the UK since 2020 – my proposed projects draw on the threads of migration, nostalgia, and drift that weave throughout Hong Kong and Chinese experiences. I hope to organise a film programme on these themes alongside a documentary film/oral history project on the emotional journeys of BN(O) holders and others who consider Hong Kong a home.

My recent and upcoming publications/conferences span East Asian subcultures and film-philosophy – feel free to reach out.”
