Construction for the second phase of the Shanghai Film Park kicked off last week, which will expand the current area from 31 hectares to 41 hectares, the largest project since the park opened in 1999.

The upgrade will divide the park into three sections, namely the entertainment experience zone, the old Shanghai-themed hi-tech set and the film industry tourism and film-making area.

“Based on Shanghais advantage as a sci-tech innovation center, we will build a strong foundation for the film industry, combining cultural innovation and entrepreneurship,” said Wang Jianer, president of Shanghai Film Group. The business model will be enriched as well and serve not only as a base for film shooting, but also a hub for key joint work on early creation and post-production.

A highlight of the project will be a 3,000-square-meter studio that would introduce a batch of new crafts, including script preview, digital setting, digital asset and virtual shooting. Three such studios will be built next May while six existing ones will be refurbished. Meanwhile, the parks 17,000-square-meter themed Jingan Temple Street has just opened to receive visitors.

The area replicates the old Shanghai of the 1930s, with a complete set of decoration that takes people back in time. The entrance square will be restructured by the end of the year with the aim of offering an immersive experience as soon as visitors enter the area. Design ideas are now being sought for the project.
