Huge congratulations to Shanshan Wu who recently started her PhD research journey with the University of Liverpool.

Shanshan joined UCFC via a placement partnership with Birkbeck, University of London in 2021. During her placement, she led the Marketing Team for the 2021 edition of Odyssey, our annual film festival. Together with her team, she created some successful and original marketing campaigns for the festival.

After her graduation from Birkbeck, University of London, Shanshan worked on her PhD proposal and was finally accepted by the University of Liverpool.

Here is Shanshan’s introduction to her PhD research project:

“My practice-based research project will investigate the transcultural remembrance of the Covid-19 pandemic through moving images in China. Focusing on the young adults (age 18 to 35) who travelled between China and the UK during the pandemic, such as working visa holders and international students, it will examine how pandemic memories are articulated and conveyed in a transcultural context. I will produce a 45-60-minute essay film in tandem with a written dissertation. I will work with interviews, moving image archives, such as news footage and social media videos, as well as my personal memories, to remediate the memories of the incident.

My project will analyse a selection of Chinese moving images produced by state-controlled organisations and professional filmmakers, vloggers, and general netizens between 2020 and 2022, focusing on documentaries and social media videos that contribute to the construction of collective and transcultural memories of the pandemic. This research will explore, under China’s memory policy, how pandemic memories cross national borders through various forms of screen media. Moving image artefacts constitute an archive of personal and collective memories, perform acts of remembrance and commemoration, and structure various modes of resistance to national and hegemonic discourses of forgetting.”

This project is supervised by Dr Alyssa Grossman and Professor Michelle Henning from the Department of Communication and Media, University of Liverpool.
