Oscar winning Japanese animation The Boy and the Heron is set to be released in mainland China from 3 April. It was already released in Hong Kong SAR back in December 2023.

Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazki’s popularity in China is nothing new. Before The Boy and the Heron, the Middle Kingdom has already re-released several classics by the director. The Boy and the Heron’s release will be an explosion, not only because of the master’s legacy but also for its fame from Oscar.

The film has grossed $1,711,426 in Hong Kong SAR, $5,605,692 in the UK and $173,132,839 worldwide. We look forward to observing its box-office performance in mainland China in its opening week.

In the wake of his mother’s death and his father’s remarriage, a headstrong boy named Mahito ventures into a dreamlike world shared by both the living and the dead.

You can still watch this fantasy adventure anime at some cinemas in the UK, we highly recommend it.
