There will still be light. Last year, another rare case study emerged from mainland China, where an Italian film achieved remarkable box office success.

As we continue to emphasise in our talks and communications, mainland China will become if not yet the largest market for non-Hollywood films, it is certainly becoming one of the most important ones. That is why we exist: we believe that one day independent UK films can also find success in this challenging but exciting market.

Directed by Paola Cortellesi, the film is set in post-war Rome. It follows a working-class woman who dreams of a better future for herself and her daughter while enduring abuse from her domineering husband. When a mysterious letter arrives, she discovers the courage to change the course of her life.

Among many festival honours, There’s Still Tomorrow also won Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Rooster Film Awards in 2025.

The film was released in Chinese cinemas in March 2025 by renowned Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke’s company, Unknown Pleasure Pictures. It grossed £32.79 million, making mainland China the film’s second-largest market after Italy, its home country.

While the overall Chinese market is still facing challenges, particularly for local films, we continue to believe there are opportunities for low-budget independent arthouse films from Europe. We are committed to sharing case studies like this with UK-based filmmakers and companies, and to facilitating future adventures when opportunities arise.

The film is now available for streaming in the UK, it was distributed by Vue Entertainment in 2024 theatrically.
