Hong Kong film Time Still Turns the Pages set to release across UK cinemas by Trinity CineAsia in November.
★★★★☆ 4/5
Hearing ‘Rêverie’ being brutalised with a metronome feels perverse. An impressionistic youth being shackled by expectation is explored in Nick Cheuk’s directorial debut.
The burden of spiritual dissatisfaction plagues parents and by extension children in a cycle of grief. Cheuk suggests school can facilitate meaningful change when sympathy is distilled into the classroom setting.
A sustained tension over the disconnect between past and present is maintained through the film. Helped tremendously by the exceptional performances of the child actors. It’s hard not to grimace at such visceral stress and guilt.
I would like to raise attention to the incredibly immersive sound design from Yiu Chun Hin and Lee Yiu Keung George that distinguish between public and personal spaces.
